A microlaryngoscopy is performed to find and treat problems of the voice box, such as the cause of a hoarse voice, or if your voice box looks unusual.
We may may recommended voice rest after surgery depending on the procedure. If complete voice rest is advised, this means no speaking including whispering for up to a couple of days.
Post surgery you will most likely have a less than severe sore throat.
An oesophagoscopy is a procedure to examine the oesophagus – also known as the gullet or food pipe. It’s usually carried out to investigate symptoms such as difficultly or pain when swallowing.
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. A long, thin metal tube with a light and camera at the end, called an oesophagoscope, will be gently passed through your mouth and into the oesophagus. Images from the camera will relay to a screen.
Your consultant will talk to you about any findings or observations made during the procedure before you go home and, if required, follow-up appointments will be arranged. If a biopsy was taken, it can take a few days to get the results.
A bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that lets your Specialist look inside your airways with a bronchoscope. A bronchoscope is a thin tube with a light and camera on it. It can help your specialist diagnose, evaluate and sometimes treat conditions that affect your lungs, trachea (windpipe) or throat.
In most cases, bronchoscopy is an outpatient procedure, so you won’t need to spend the night in the hospital. You can typically go home within a few hours of the procedure.
An oral cavity biopsy is a procedure where a small piece of tissue is removed from an area so that it can be looked at closely under a microscope. The biopsy may aim to remove an area completely (an excision biopsy). This is usually only appropriate for small lumps or swellings. Occasionally only a small piece of an abnormal area is removed to confirm a diagnosis (an incisional biopsy).
In most cases biopsies are carried out under local anaesthesia (an injection into the area to numb it). The injection takes a couple of minutes to work and means that the biopsy will be painless. The biopsy usually leaves a small hole that often requires stitching. In the majority of cases the stitches used are dissolvable and take around two weeks to disappear.
This is usually done in an operating room under general anesthesia. The specialist uses a laryngoscope to look for tumors in the throat and voice box. Other parts of your mouth, nose, and throat are examined, too. The specialist might also use an esophagoscope to look into the esophagus or a bronchoscope to look into the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi.
Your specialist will look at these areas through the scopes to find any tumors, see how big they are, and see how far they might have spread to nearby areas. A small piece of tissue from any tumors or other abnormal areas might be taken out to be looked at closely (biopsied) to see if they contain cancer. Biopsies can be done with special tools that are used through the scopes.
A skin biopsy is a procedure to remove cells from the surface of your body so that they can be tested in a lab. A skin biopsy is used most often to diagnose skin conditions.
The type of skin biopsy you have will depends on your symptoms and how much skin is affected.
